In 1938 came the first major comparison between Alfa Romeo and BMW at the Mille Miglia, and was BMW’s first attempt at this famous race.
BMW 328 Roadster Mille Miglia 1938 #114
Four factory stock cars lined up on the starting grid. The Briton A.F.P. Fane won hands down in the twolitre class with a BMW 328, while BMW came 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th in the overall rankings. The breakthrough had finally come: alongside Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz, BMW had now developed to become the third most important manufacturer of racing cars in Germany.
